In this post, I will introduce the Miyagikyo Distillery Tour located in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Based on my visit in November 2024, I will share details about the tour experience and whiskey tastings. If you’re visiting Miyagi, be sure to add this destination to your itinerary!
About the Miyagikyo Distillery
The Miyagikyo Distillery was established in 1969 to continue Masataka Taketsuru’s dream of blending malt whiskies from different distilleries to create a richer and more complex whiskey. It is Nikka Whisky’s second distillery and is located in the beautiful Miyagi prefecture.
Distillery Tour
The guided tour takes you through the outdoor manufacturing areas of the distillery. You’ll receive detailed explanations about the whiskey production process and the history of Nikka Whisky. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the craftsmanship behind their iconic whiskeys.
Whiskey Tasting
The guided tour is free and includes a tasting of 3 different whiskeys, including Miyagikyo, Super Nikka, and Apple Wine. During my visit, these were the same 3 whiskeys I tasted 5 years ago.
For those interested in more options, there is a bar on-site where you can enjoy additional whiskey tastings for a separate fee.

Reservations are generally required, but for early morning tours on weekdays, same-day registration may be possible, depending on availability.
